Retired from Wayne State University, Dr. Edwards continues to be active in her roles as an educator and psychiatric-mental health clinician. She is an expert in the care of people with specialized mental health needs. Known for her compassionate care and teaching, Dr. Edwards’ dedication to service and community is beyond measure.

A natural mentor, people are drawn to Dr. Edwards for her ability to guide them through complex times and serve as a beacon of kindness and reflection. From serving as a volunteer with events and wish-granting, to being a consistent donor, to sharing the Make-A-Wish Michigan mission across all aspects of her community, Dr. Edwards truly makes wishes come true.

One of Make-A-Wish Michigan’s biggest fans, Wanda, notes that it is easy to stay inspired and involved. “I have seen the impact a wish has on children and their families. It is so much more than a wish; it is the wrap-around of love. A wish changes the lives of young people. There is no other organization doing this work the way Make-A-Wish Michigan does it.”

Ellie Wilcox

Ellie Wilcox supports Make-A-Wish Michigan as a monthly donor, event attendee, wish-granting volunteer, and has included MAWMI in her legacy plans. Ellie also just celebrated her 15th anniversary as a staff member. Most inspiring is that Ellie shares her own story as a Wish Alumni with ease and joy to inspire current Wish Kids and their families, as well as the community.

Ellie tells the story of her critical illness as a teenager with her signature humor and grace. At age 17, Ellie focused on senior year, prom, school, and making memories. She jokes that the call from her doctor came in while she was wearing her favorite *NSYNC T-shirt and had a packed social calendar. It became clear that she needed to go to the hospital immediately, and things were dire. There would be no football game with friends that evening. This was the beginning of more than three years of grueling treatment and medical interventions to battle acute lymphoblastic leukemia. From extended hospital stays and chemotherapy, to profound nausea and losing her hair, the sparkle of young adulthood gave way to a scary and often isolating medical pathway – in moments.

Reflective of her natural determination and optimism, Ellie leaned into the strength born of diversity. She recalls, “Cancer happened to me – but didn’t define me.” Upon being granted a wish from Make-A-Wish Michigan, Ellie wished to go on a tropical beach vacation with her family. She wanted to share the power of her wish with those closest to her and to share her gratitude for their love and care. The idea of a special adventure with the sun and ocean gave her something to daydream about.

“My wish gave me something to be hopeful about and gave me the ability to control a choice in my life, when I had absolutely no control. My wish made me feel empowered, special, and ready to fight for the next day—and the rest of my life. Now, I am a mom myself, and I am incredibly honored to give back to the very organization that changed my life.”

Ellie joined the MAWMI team in 2010 and has been a force for bringing friends and resources to our mission ever since.

The CEO and owner of Brogan & Partners, Ellyn, is well known across the state and region for her expertise, mentoring, and impactful leadership. Ellyn’s passion for making a difference in others’ lives is front and center in every facet of her life. She has been honored as a ‘Notable Woman in Marketing’ by Crain’s Detroit Business and recognized as an ‘Esteemed Woman of Michigan’ by the Dr. Gary Burnstein Health Clinic, among many accolades.

A breast cancer survivor as a young mother, Ellyn serves as an inspiration for other women battling breast cancer – speaking of her own journey, providing encouragement and motivation. While in treatment, Ellyn decided to plan a celebration to thank everyone who had helped her along the way. The simple act of organizing a party – and having something to look forward to – propelled Ellyn through treatment. Understanding the impact of having something positive and exciting to think about during such a challenging chapter gives Ellyn a personal perspective on the power of a wish and the experience of Wish Kids. These days, Ellyn continues to plan fabulous soirees, and her annual gathering is now a Wine & Wishes toast to benefit Make-A-Wish Michigan!

Ellyn shared, “I am inspired every day by the strength of our wish kids and their families. I know firsthand the importance of having something to look forward to while you are receiving medical treatment. I also find so much hope for the future in the MAWMI team, volunteers, and Board – all who care deeply about the organization and mission. It is abundantly clear that being part of the team is not just a job – it is so much more. I love Make-A-Wish Michigan!”
